The trains make everything within an easy reach. It can take you almost anywhere you want go. I suggest when you are going to places like Edinburgh to take the train, it’s easy and relaxing. I love to take the train to London, it makes it so accessible also who wants to drive an hour or more after a long day in the nation's capital?
I often think that because people physically have to pay for a ticket, they think driving is better but forget about the wear and tear, insurance, gasoline, and parking are a part of getting to their destination. It is better for the environment and traffic for you to take the train and with booking ahead and not traveling during peak hours, you can save money.
Once you know where you need to go use Google Maps to see what your options on getting there. If you are going by train there are a few ways you can save yourself some money. Train ticket prices don't make any sense so don't try to understand them:
If you are going to London, go to Liverpool Street instead of Kings Cross, it saves you quite a bit! Usually only during the week.
Eurostar
You can also take the Eurostar all over Europe. It will take you to over 100 destinations. When traveling to places like Paris, I recommend taking the Eurostar from London instead of flying. It takes the same amount of time and is not as much of a hassle. You also do not have to arrive hours before the train and it takes you right into the center of the city.
