Peterborough is a huge city. There are not many attractions that would bring you here except for the cathedral. You can make Peterborough worth a day out by coming to see the cathedral, having a bit of lunch and then doing some shopping at the Queensgate Shopping Centre or the Rivergate Shopping Centre.
It holds a market on Tuesday-Saturday from 8.30-4.30 p.m.
It also hosts an annual half marathon that I highly recommend. It is great for a personal best as it is virtually flat.
Peterborough Cathedral
I went to Peterborough for the day as I was told that the Cathedral is one of the finest in England and I would agree. You can see the tomb of Katherine of Aragon (Henry VIII’s first wife) and where Mary, Queen of the Scots, was buried before Oliver Cromwell's troops destroyed her tomb.
Also it has the largest Mediaeval painted wooden ceiling. It is a very impressive building if you are anything like me, you will appreciate the architecture. It is located right near the market cross in the city centre. I just sat and listened to the service that was going on and can see why people are so moved by buildings such as this.
