Settlements in this area date back to Roman times, with Icklingham, on the River Lark, being a very important centre.
There are many interesting buildings in both villages, a few fine examples are the Market Cross, market square and St Mary’s Church in Mildenhall; and Lakenheath Church with its fine medieval wall paintings, recently restored.
Another place to get out and stretch your legs is the Lakenheath Fens.
It is located north of RAF Lakenheath towards RAF Feltwell.
Dogs are allowed as long as they are on a lead. The walk can be a bit marshy and muddy but that is what you can expect from the Fens!
They also have regular events to get the little ones involved. These you have to pay to take part but otherwise it is free to visit.
This is a great place to get out and see nature in your backyard.
Mildenhall Museum
Mildenhall Museum is right in the centre of town. It is children friendly. They have a wide range of items on display from war paraphernalia to the Mildenhall Treasure.
The Mildenhall Treasure was discovered in 1943 by a ploughman. He found 34 Roman pieces in a field in Mildenahll. This is displayed at the museum.
A great place to take the children on a rainy day if you are looking for something to do!
Mildenhall Swimming Pool
Mildenhall Swimming Pool is a great place to take the children. It is inside and has classes for all ages.
Skies Above Mildenhall
The Skies above Mildenhall walk is a 5.5 mile that takes you through Mildenhall, up Larks River up to Judes Ferry and back. Takes about 2 hours and if you are lucky enough, the planes will be flying about you.
It is a nice walk on a sunny day along the river. Let the dogs off and get out there. You could stop at Judes Ferry have a pint or lunch and walk back. Our dogs were very happy after our walk and were definitely worn down.
Check out the AA website for details of the walk and a map.
