We actually happened on this property accidentally. We were on our way to Tescos to get some bits for our stay at Camber Sands. The sign said you had to prebook (I think that is even before COVID times) but on the way back, I took a chance to see if there was any openings and we were in luck!
Looking on the listing in the National Trust book before we came down here, I chose not to put it on our list but happy that we did! It is a great place to spend a good 1-2 hours.
This property is unusual for National Trust properties in that when Ellen Terry, who was a famous Shakespearean actor, died her daughter kept it as a memorial to her. A lot of National Trust properties have to track down items but here, the collection was still in the house.
As we visited it in COVID times, we spent most our time out in the gardens after a tour of the house. The house was great as it had many of her costumes from her roles.
The gardens were also very nice and probably what Bug loved the most! They had a scavenger hunt list for her and it was so beautiful to wander around and sit in. Dogs on leads are allowed, there are bathrooms and worth packing a picnic and relaxing!
