It is mandatory for children to be schooled between the ages of 5 and 16, although some arrangements are made for children under 5, and many pupils remain at school beyond the minimum leaving age. The child has to be five by 31 August. However, children can start to go full-time in the September after their fourth birthday.
All 3 and 4 year olds are eligible for 15 hours of free early education per week. This is a good way to give your child a head start because they start learning at these locations. Children can go to day nurseries, private preschools or playgroups, nursery schools or stand-alone schools. Day nurseries provide care for children between 6 months to 5 years old and are open long hours and school holidays. At private schools you must pay fee to enroll children and they often go to school on Saturdays. Pre-schools or play groups are led by trained staff, aided by parents. They care for children from 2 to 4 years old; sessions last up to 3 hours per day and are usually inexpensive. Nursery schools are either State or privately run. Stand-alone schools follow a particular teaching school curriculum. They care for children from 3 to five years old and children attend for five half days. Schools are free (state schools only) to attend but children are required to wear uniforms and sports wear at school. Primary uniform is usually simple, polo shirts and sweatshirts in school colors and purchased inexpensively via the school office. The school will inform you their requirements and it differs between schools. You can then get the trousers and skirts from places like Sainsbury’s, Asda, M&S and Tescos. |
